Harvesting has now ended in both countries and shipments have begun. Thanks to our teams’ field work, we have managed to further expand both our Ethiopian and Kenyan ranges this year. All the coffees supplied by Belco are traceable.

In Ethiopia, we visited all our suppliers between October and February. Our field teams work in pairs: one person has field experience or is an agronomist (Shambe or Fufa) and the other a Q Grader (Fantanesh). We make the most of our trips to remind our partners of Belco’s quality requirements, and to try and improve parameters previously identified as problematic. During this period, we also look for new terroirs and new suppliers. It’s how we have managed to expand our range with some particularly lovely discoveries: Dukale Wakayo (Sidama, Bombe / Yirgacheffe, Idido), Ephrem Mulugeta (Kaffa, Gundira-Shela) and Ibrahim Jeilan (West Arsi, Ribriba)

In Kenya, we are continuing to build a network of independent professionals with our long-time partners Boyce Harries (Chania and Oreti) and David Ngibuini (MECOP). Our quality manager, Cesar Magana, spent three weeks giving David and the members of his group training in natural coffee practices. This helps us to see Kenyan varieties in a new light.

Finally, some news about our forest coffees. Our canopy management pilot project in Jimma undertaken with Khalid and Mustafa and in Kaffa with Tatmara has bolstered our experience, allowing us to develop an idea that we’ll be expanding on this year with the help of a new Meded agronomist, to whom we extend a warm welcome. This will breathe a new lease of life into our forest coffee range, which we’ll be updating in 2021/2022 with new specifications drafted by Delphine and the French agroforestry association, a new agroforestry manual for producers, a new website and a new logo!
